Healthy Holiday Hacks

29th March 2018

When we think holidays, we think of the chance to relax, unwind and spend time doing whatever we want which makes it easy to indulge and let healthy living fall to the wayside. You’re on holidays, of course it’s okay to indulge a little more than usual (you’re only human!) but we’ve but together some helpful hints to ensure you return home feeling refreshed, healthy and better than ever!

See the Sights
All holidays need an element of rest and relaxation, but it is also a great time to take advantage of getting some exercise. If you are already doing exercise, it doesn’t need to go on your “to do” list. Get outside and see the local sights. You can go for a walk or run on the beach or explore the local shops. Maybe you can hire a bike and see the scenery that way. Either way, you will be seeing new things, making memories and exercising without even realizing it.

Try a Yoga Class
Hitting the mat in Yoga class is a great way to release stress, stretch and tone up the body. If you are totally new to it, add it to the list of new things to try while you’re away from home. If you have practiced before, enjoy the class as a time to reconnect with yourself. Your body will thank you for it.

Take Time for Yourself at the Gym
Make the most of your extra time on holiday by hitting the gym in the morning to energize yourself for the day ahead. Lots of accommodation options offer their guests free access to a gym so do your research before you book. Use your gym time to multitask – take a book or your latest TV show on the treadmill and kill two birds with one stone.

Request Healthy Food
Holidays are a time to indulge in great food and try new places to eat but the food doesn’t have to be unhealthy! Many restaurants offer fresh fruits and vegetables and yummy local produce as a healthier alternative. Opt for fresh vegetables or a side salad when you are given the choice or stay in for the night and enjoy a home cooked meal at your accommodation.

Walk it out
Make a goal to walk as many places as you can or choose to take the steps instead of the elevator. If you were planning to drive into town, why not walk? Not only is walking great exercise, it gives you the opportunity to really immerse yourself in the scenery of your holiday destination.

Stay Hydrated
It is easy to not drink enough water when you are busy travelling and sight seeing. Make sure you are getting enough H20 by bringing your own bottle to fill. If you enjoy a wine or two, make sure to drink a glass of water in between.

Treat yourself with a massage!
Promoting good health is all about finding balance. Treat yourself to a relaxing day spa treatment and enjoy some “me-time”.

Get Everyone Involved
If you are traveling with friends or family, get them involved with the holiday health hacks. Make it fun by challenging one another to walk, eat well and explore. This will automatically make more time to enjoy one another’s company and be healthy while having fun.
