Your Presence Is Their Present: Getting Some Work Done On Your Holidays

11th January 2018

Taking a summer holiday over the festive season is a great Australian tradition, and a priceless way to create beautiful holiday memories with your loved ones. But, unfortunately, sometimes work will intrude and there are tasks that must be done while you are away from home.

The good news is that you can do both, as long as you set some ground rules. Here are four tips to make sure you keep on top of your working life as well as enjoy a wonderful family holiday on the gorgeous Bellarine Peninsula.

1. Take a few days off (completely)
The best way to truly enjoy your holiday is to switch off the work side of your brain. And this means going ‘off-grid’. Designate a few days or a week of your break as dedicated holiday time – no work phone calls, no texting colleagues and no pulling all-nighters to throw together presentations or re-design your online store. Turn off your email notifications so you won’t be constantly ‘pinged’ and have your out-of-office response turned on. There is so much to see and do in Queenscliff and all over the Bellarine that you won’t have any trouble finding great ways to spend quality time with family and friends.

2. Focus on one thing at a time
Often when people try to do a multitude of tasks they never complete any of them very well. To spend as little time as possible working during your holiday, block your work so that you can focus on one specific task or project at a time. Write a to-do list if it helps, with all the top priorities at the top. You’ll feel as though you have achieved a lot in a short space of time, and you won’t feel as though you need to keep slugging it out and intruding on your family time exploring the beach, Queenscliff pier or wandering through town or the Harbour.

3. Lock up your devices
It’s incredibly tempting to use your smartphone or tablet to constantly be checking emails and text messages from the office. But this just means you’re in that constant limbo phase of not really working, but not really having time off, either. And that can be more tiring than endless games of beach cricket! Leave your devices in your cabin or caravan in a secure spot so you’re fully focused on enjoying your break, and not tempted to sneak a peek.

4. Get your priorities right
If you know ahead of time that you’ll need to focus on work at some point during your break, set the priorities up front. Know which pieces of work need to be done, and which ones really can wait until you are back on deck. Always plan your holiday activities with your family first, then work time second – after all, you are supposed to be taking a break from the daily grind, not letting it take over your life. This is also the best way to avoid the FOMO you’d have if they planned a huge adventure without you!

When you do have to work on holiday, it’s a great idea to go somewhere quiet and catered to professionals to achieve everything you need to efficiently without interrupting your family’s time. It’s never ideal to have to ask your partner and the kids to make themselves scarce while you do your work in your cabin or caravan.

The Business Hub at Queenscliff Marina is a space that offers desks, private meeting rooms, high-speed wi-fi and printing facilities for casual hire.
